4000 islands, Laos

Four Thousand Islands, Si Phan Don, is a group of islands in the Mekong River in Southern Laos and which marks often a stay as the last stop in Laos before crossing the border to Cambodia.

The Si Phan Don is a riverine archipelago in the Champasak province. This area lies in a narrow section of the country with so much water around you it’s hard to see when you get on that boat that you will be arriving to an inhabited area.

The Mekong here bulges to a breadth of 14km (the river’s widest reach along its 4350km) from the Tibetan Plateau to the South China Sea.

The name 4000 islands comes from the thousands of islets and sandbars that appear in the dry months
